Texas Hold'em - Hand Rankings
Texas Hold'em is played with a 52 card deck. There are four suits, namely hearts, diamonds, spades and clubs, and all are of equal value in the game. Each suit has 13 ranks, meaning that there are 13 numbers (including J Q K A) in each suit. That said, the different hands are ranked according to their rarity. As in life, the rarer something is, the more valuable it is. So in order the hand rankings are:
Royal Flush - All of the same suit, and all in order

Straight Flush - Any 5 cards in order and in the same suit

Four of a kind - 4 of a number

Full House - 3 of a kind and a pair (in this case we would say A's over 2's)

Flush - Any 5 cards of the same suit in any order

Straight - 5 cards in order but not of the same suit

Three of a kind - 3 of the same number

Two Pair - 2 separate pairs

Pair - 2 of the same number

High Card - The highest card wins

Knowing your hand rankings isn't enough. You need to make each decision within the context of your game. You need to know more about your starting hands, and more about the other players. Different starting hands give you a higher probability of winning. We will have a look at this in Scene 5: Starting Hand Groups. To know more about he players, you need to watch your players closely, pick up on their patterns, and know what type of players they are. Let's have a look what types of players you can get.
